January invites reflection, renewal, and intentional living—making it the perfect time to explore Veganuary, a global movement that encourages people to try a vegan lifestyle for January. Launched in 2014 in the UK, Veganuary began as a grassroots campaign and has since grown into an international phenomenon, inspiring millions to explore plant‑based eating for health, environmental sustainability, and compassion for animals. Today, Veganuary serves as both a challenge and an invitation: to learn, to experiment, and to reimagine our relationship with food.
At Conscious Michiana, we’re embracing Veganuary as a month‑long opportunity to highlight the rich history, cultural significance, and wellness benefits of plant‑forward living. Throughout the month, we will highlight key celebrations and themes on our social media that honor nourishment, community, and conscious choice.
Veg Fest: Celebrating Plant‑Based Community
Veg Fests—short for Vegan or Vegetarian Festivals—have been popping up around the world for decades, offering spaces for education, connection, and celebration. Beyond the global movement, Veg Fest holds special meaning here in Michiana.
We recently interviewed Michael Pound, Chair of Michiana VegFest, on the topic of Veganuary titled, Gentle Shifts, Lasting Impact: A Veganuary Conversation.
In 2022, Conscious Michiana recorded a podcast featuring Michiana Veg Fest, sharing the local story behind this grassroots event and the community members who helped bring it to life. The conversation highlighted how Michiana Veg Fest grew from a shared vision of compassion, sustainability, and access to plant‑based living into a beloved regional gathering.
This year, on April 26th, Michiana Veg Fest brings together plant‑based food vendors, wellness practitioners, environmental advocates, artists, and conscious creators. Rooted in community and accessibility, the festival reminds us that plant‑based living is not about restriction, but about abundance, creativity, and shared values.
National Bean Day (January 6)
Beans are one of humanity’s oldest and most trusted food sources, cultivated for over 7,000 years across ancient civilizations in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Celebrated on January 6, National Bean Day honors these humble legumes that continue to nourish cultures worldwide. Rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, beans are a cornerstone of plant‑based diets and a symbol of simple, sustainable nourishment.
National Soup Month
January is also National Soup Month, a celebration of one of the most universal comfort foods. From ancient broths used for healing to modern plant‑based soups enjoyed for warmth and nourishment, soup has long been a symbol of care, community, and restoration. Plant‑based soups, in particular, showcase how vegetables, legumes, herbs, and grains can come together to create deeply satisfying meals that support both body and spirit.
National Granola Day (January 21)
Granola’s roots trace back to the late 19th‑century health movement, when whole grains were promoted for vitality and digestion. Today, granola represents mindful eating—often made with oats, nuts, seeds, and natural sweeteners. Celebrated on January 21, National Granola Day highlights the beauty of simple ingredients and the importance of starting the day with intention and nourishment.
Green Juice Day (January 26)
Green Juice Day invites us to reconnect with the healing power of plants in their most vibrant form. Green juices—made from leafy greens, herbs, and fruits—have roots in holistic health traditions that emphasize detoxification, vitality, and balance. Observed on January 26th, this day encourages mindful consumption and a renewed appreciation for nature’s ability to restore and energize.
A Month of Conscious Nourishment
Together, these celebrations weave a larger story—one of mindful living, compassionate choices, and community connection. Veganuary is not about perfection; it’s about curiosity, learning, and progress. Throughout the month, Conscious Michiana will continue to explore these themes, share resources, and uplift local voices that support plant‑based wellness.
We invite you to join us this month—try something new, revisit ancient wisdom, and discover how small, intentional choices can nourish both ourselves and the world around us.
