Mental wellness is often treated as something we only address when we’re overwhelmed or in crisis—but what if care could begin much sooner, and much more gently?

In this Mental Wellness Month episode of the Michiana Hivecast, we sit down with Mary Beth Schramlin, a local social worker and owner of A Mindful Place in LaPorte, IN, to explore what mental wellness looks like when it’s rooted in compassion, connection, and everyday care. This conversation invites listeners to rethink mental health not as a breaking point, but as an ongoing relationship with ourselves, our bodies, and our communities.

Together, we discuss how stress, burnout, and emotional overload can show up even when we appear to be “functioning,” and why it’s valid to seek support before things feel unmanageable. Mary Beth shares insight from her work in the Michiana community, offering a grounded perspective on how mental wellness is shaped by environment, nervous system regulation, and access to supportive relationships.

A key focus of this episode is the mind–body connection. We explore how emotions and trauma can live in the body, why slowing down can feel uncomfortable for some, and how small, accessible practices—like grounding, creative expression, and mindful pauses—can help people feel safer and more present in their day-to-day lives.

We also talk about community care:
What does support look like when it’s trauma-informed?
How can friends, families, and workplaces show up without trying to fix or push?
And what are gentle first steps for people who are curious about support but unsure where to begin?

Throughout the conversation, we normalize hesitation, honor personal pacing, and challenge the idea that someone has to be “bad enough” to deserve care. Mental wellness, as we discuss, is not about perfection or productivity—it’s about tending to ourselves with the same kindness we often offer others.

This episode is for anyone who:

  • Feels exhausted but not “in crisis”
  • Wants to support mental wellness in themselves or others
  • Is curious about trauma-informed, community-based approaches to care
  • Believes healing is deeply connected to belonging and compassion

As always, Conscious Michiana is dedicated to fostering conversations that are inclusive, accessible, and grounded in connection. We hope this episode reminds you that support is not a last resort—it’s a form of care you’re worthy of at every stage.
