The number 108 carries special significance in yoga. There are 108 Upanishads, 108 names for Shiva, and 108 vital points in the body according to Ayurveda. Because of the sacredness of this number, symbolizing completeness and a link between humanity and the divine, many yogis practice 108 sun salutations to mark significant dates, such as the start of a new year, a new life chapter, or a new season. Sun salutations facilitate rhythmic movement for the entire body through a dynamic sequence that moves energy, improves circulation, and grounds the mind.
Join Aspen and other members of our community on the morning of the summer solstice for this sacred practice of 108 sun salutations. After an introduction and warm-up, we’ll begin practicing variations of surya namaskar (sun salutation) A, with cues, modifications, props, counting aids, and breaks provided. We’ll end with a gentle cool down and savasana as we welcome this new season. No prior experience necessary. All levels (including total beginners) welcome.
Bring water, a yoga mat (if you have one), and a towel.
